Grind and save at the same time!

Have you ever wondered how much you can save for the Christmas season by not buying ready-made, ground spices, flour mixtures, chocolate, coffee, poppy seeds or even nuts at the store?

Let’s see some examples!

Spices such as cinnamon, cloves, paprika, ginger or nutmeg contain essential oils and flavorings that are lost immediately after grinding and packaging in the store. So instead of buying these spices, you can easily chop them with the Thermomix. Thanks to the Turbo level, you can grind aromatic spices in seconds. We can supplement the above list of spices with parsley, coriander, mint, thyme or even sage. If these plants grow in the garden or in the smaller kitchen garden, then it can be even easier!

We can store freshly ground spices for a long time in airtight containers or spice containers. However, care must be taken that they are not exposed to direct sunlight and heat. They will have a safe place in the cupboard in the pantry!

In the previous blog article, we already wrote about grinding flour, but of course we could continue that line, since flour can be made from many types of grain:

  • maize
  • rice
  • oats
  • rye
  • spelled wheat
  • buckwheat

You can also forget about the gluten-free flour mix available in the store, as it can be prepared in seconds with the Thermomix, and is therefore certainly preservative- and additive-free. It is better to buy the raw materials for the flour mixture in larger packages, so you can grind fresh flour at any time.

Gluten-free flour mixture

Ingredients:

200 g long-grain white rice
160 g sushi rice
60 g white chia seeds
140 g potato starch
140 g sorghum flour
200 g arrowroot flour

Preparation:

  1. Place the white rice, sushi rice and chia seeds in the mixing bowl and grind  2 p/speed 9.  Push the pieces stuck to the side of the mixing bowl to the bottom of the bowl with the spatula.
  2. Add all other ingredients and mix  15 sec/speed 6 . Store the flour in a sealable container until ready to use.

Ground poppy seeds, popular not only at Christmas   , may also contain other allergens, as factories cannot guarantee a 100% clean environment. Where it is important to avoid various allergens, grinding these products at home can be an important aspect. Looking at the store shelves, the price of ground poppies is at least double that of unground edible poppies. Prices are similar for walnuts, sunflower seeds or even cashews. Grinding these nuts is only  5-7 seconds/speed 6.  For uniform grinding, 150-250 g of nuts can be placed in the mixing bowl at the same time.

Coffee is almost an essential part of the morning. The price of coffee beans is around HUF 5,000-6,000 per kilo, while the ground version is double that price. Why pay double the price when Thermomix can help you? And if you want to flavor your coffee with a little sugar, don’t forget that it costs HUF 300-400. You can make powdered sugar from granulated sugar  at a speed of 10 sec/10  , even from brown sugar, erythritol or even stevia.
